Malcolm will be teaching a course in the summer of 2008 at the Haliburton School of the Arts in Ontario. The course will take place 21 – 25 July 2008, and is entitled “Carving Wood Signs”, and here is the description: This course will comprise a general introduction to the carving of wood signs. Students will develop a working knowledge of wood and the safe use of carving tools. Students will learn incised carving of both straight and curved letters, using special double-bevelled carving chisels and gouges. Following practical instruction on sharpening, students will lay out and carve a lettered sign. Woven through the schedule of practical sign carving there will be interactive lectures on sign design, wood finishing, workshop requirements, and relevant material and literature resources available. Extra to the course fee, there will be a $40 charge for rental of tools and an additional $40.00 for signmaking materials. These are payable at the outset of the course. Should students elect to buy the toolset during the course, the rental fee will be deducted from the cost.
